This site is run by me, Mujtaba Syed, as an individual. I'm the data controller for anything described below. You can reach me at hello@mujsyed.com.

I've tried to write this in plain English rather than legal language. If anything is unclear, ask me.

What I collect

If you subscribe to the newsletter: your email address, and your name if you choose to give one. If you sign in as a member, a record of when you signed in.

If you email me: whatever is in your email.

Automatically, when you visit: my hosting provider records standard technical information such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you requested. This is used to run and secure the site.

Email tracking: If you receive the newsletter, I can see whether an email was opened. I use this only as a rough measure of whether people are reading, and I don't act on individual behaviour.

I don't collect payment details, because nothing on this site is for sale.

To send you the newsletter — on the basis of your consent. You gave it by subscribing and confirming your email address, and you can withdraw it at any time using the unsubscribe link at the foot of every email.

To run and secure the site — on the basis of my legitimate interests in keeping it working and preventing abuse.

To reply to you — because you contacted me and expect an answer.

Who else handles it

I use two services, both acting on my instructions:

  • Ghost hosts the site and stores subscriber records
  • Mailgun delivers the newsletter emails

Both are outside the UK, so your data is transferred internationally. Those transfers rely on the standard safeguards permitted under UK data protection law, including the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.

I don't sell your data, share it for advertising, or give it to anyone else unless I'm legally required to.

Cookies

The site sets a small number of essential cookies — for example, to keep you signed in if you're a member. There are no advertising or third-party tracking cookies.

How long I keep it

Your email address stays on the subscriber list until you unsubscribe or ask me to delete it. Emails you send me are kept for as long as they're useful and then deleted.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask me to:

  • give you a copy of what I hold about you
  • correct anything inaccurate
  • delete it
  • restrict or object to how I use it
  • send it to you or someone else in a portable format

You can also withdraw consent to the newsletter at any time. Email hello@mujsyed.com and I'll deal with it within a month.

Complaints

If you think I've handled your data badly, please tell me first and I'll try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, or on 0303 123 1113.

Changes

If I change this notice I'll update the date at the top.
